Charles & Ray Eames – widely regarded as America’s most important designers

Charles & Ray Eames – widely regarded as America’s most important designers.

Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood & fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life – from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age – has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film since their death dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.

Despite the proliferation of unauthorised copies of Eames original designs, mid-century modern devotes remain loyal to authentic pieces of  their mid-century furniture. American design vanguard Herman Miller recently settled an legal dispute with an Australian distributor of‘replica’ versions of Eames’s designs – sparking online debate for those who in support of authentic design pieces,a new generation of home decorators who believe it’s their right to purchase‘a look designer look  at a cheaper price.those pro copy designer furniture reamining unphased by copyright & other issues posed by those in support.

Here Charles Eames comes across as an egotistical, manipulative, and ungenerous genius, whereas his long-suffering but no less talented second wife (whom he met at Michigan’s Cranbrook Academy of Art) is shown to be self-abnegating, acquiescent, and much more responsible for their joint success than generally thought during their lifetimes. (His early marriage to Catherine Woermann ended in divorce in 1941, when he left her and their young daughter, Lucia, for Ray Kaiser, in large part because his first wife was uninterested in the life wholly dedicated to art that he envisioned.)
