History of the Charles Eames Lounge Chair 670

Unlike Eames previous furniture designs the LCW, DCW, LCM the Eames lounger was the first designer chair the pair created for the higher end furniture market. Produced initially in 1956 it appeared on Arlene Francis “home” show broadcast on the NBC TV network. Since that time the chair has appeared in 100’s of films magazines and television shows including the sitcom Fraiser, House and in the first season of Friends.

But even a chair as gorgeous as this would not have been regarded as one of the greatest designer chairs ever created if it were not luxuriously comfortable. In fact when it was first designed Ray Eames remarked that the chair looked “comfortable and un-designy”

Materials of the Eames Lounge Chair

The Charles Eames Lounge chair No. 670 was Eames’ most constructionally complex chair but much of the technology used was based on the Eames LCW. Composed of 3 curved plywood shells each made of 7 layers of walnut veneer, the back and head rest are identical as are the seat and ottoman. The shells and ottoman are upholstered in semi-aniline Italian leather.
The seat of the chair swivels on a 5 star cast aluminium base, with glides that are threaded so that the chair may remain level.
