How to buy solid wood furniture like an expert

If you are shopping for solid wood furniture and want to make sure you are getting your money’s worth with the quality of the product there are certain things you will want to look for in the type of wood joinery and veneer of the piece. Every house or home could use a lovely set of end tables to accent the room. All of our end tables are made from renewable, sustainable hardwood sources, and, like the rest of our solid wood furniture, our end tables come in a variety of designs: modern, classic/traditional, contemporary. Whatever style you prefer, you’ll be able to have the perfect set of end tables to fit your home. Here are a few tips to help you ensure that your furniture will not only be suited for your needs but that it is built to last a lifetime.
First things first:
The very first thing you want to check is if the product is made with solid wood or with natural veneers.  The choice between the two types really comes down to your personal preference; each has a different look and feel and requires different types of maintenance.
One thing you want to be cautious of is that it is hard for a veneer to look like real wood, so if you want people to really notice that you have a solid wooden piece you should avoid veneers.  If you are purchasing furniture with a veneer you want to closely inspect the quality of the wood, since veneers are sometimes used to cover up low-grade wood.
An important advantage of a solid wood piece is that you can actually see the state of the wood and that it can be easily refinished if it is damaged. When a product is made out of wood it looks alive, and you can check the state of its health by looking out for cracks and holes. The wholesomeness of the wood is also an important tell-tale sign of whether or not the piece is appropriately priced.
Another thing you want to consider when purchasing solid wood furniture is the type of joinery used to keep it together. A tabletop should be made with tongue and groove which is a type of joinery designed to avoid warping. The way it works is that a short tongue is cut along one edge and a corresponding groove runs the length of the edge of the other board. This technique allows flat pieces to be joined together and make a single flat piece.  Much more sturdy than butt joinery, (where the pieces are simply butted together) tongue and groove can withstand the contraction and expansion of the wood.

A word on cabinets:
When purchasing a cabinet that has panels that are made out of solid wood you should ensure that they are floating panels.
because they can expand and contract depending on the weather. The drawers on the other hand should be assembled with dovetail joinery to ensure that they will not move nor fall apart over the years. Essentially a series of pins cut to extend from the end of one board interlock with a series of tails cut into the end of another board. Once glued, a wooden dovetail has a high resistance to being pulled apart and hence requires no mechanical fasteners. Crown molding should aways be made out of solid wood because it is very hard for a veneers to attach or to be refinished.
The finish:
The finish is very important. With fine furniture you should first think about what kind of person you are.  If you are the type of person that likes to maintain furniture then you might like to go for a solid wood piece with a wax and oil finish. This type of finish needs to be maintained a couple times a year.  The advantage is that the wood shows better and scratches and marks can be easily removed by applying more oil and wax to the surface. The downside is that it reacts to heat and moisture and so if you spill something on it that accident is likely to leave a mark.
Polyurethane (water-based) lacquer finish requires much less maintenance than a wax and oil finish and hence allows you to avoid place mats and eat on top of the table without having to worry about spills, heat, and moisture. These type of finishes show sheen better and allow the furniture maker to produce a higher gloss as well as to create a wider range of colors in the wood.
You are now armed with enough knowledge to call out any tricks from ignorance-profiteering furniture salesman and pay for quality that will truly last through your family’s generations!
