Mies Rohe Barcelona Chair

Designed in 1930 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Barcelona chair remains an icon of modern design. The Barcelona Chair is a tribute to the marriage of design and craftsmanship.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair and Stool (1929), originally created to furnish his German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona, have come to epitomize modern design. The Pavilion was the site of the inaugural ceremony for the German exhibits at the exposition, and the Spanish king was to preside. It had to be an "important chair, a very elegant chair," according to the architect. "The government was to receive a king. . . . The chair had to be . . . monumental. In those circumstances, you just couldn't use a kitchen chair."

Mies van der Rohe designed the Barcelona chair to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain, while the stool was intended to accommodate their attendants. Still produced to his original specifications, this Barcelona is of quality fit for royalty.
