Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair and Ottoman (1929), originally created to furnish his German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona, have come to epitomize modern design. Mies van der Rohe designed the chair to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain, while the stool was intended to accommodate their attendants. Still produced to his original specifications, this Barcelona is of quality fit for royalty. The cushions – welting and buttons included – come from a single leather cowhide and are supported by cowhide belting straps, dyed to match the color of the chair. To create the deep, precise tufting, individual panels of leather are cut, hand welted and hand tufted. The chromed-steel frame is hand buffed to mirror-like perfection. The Barcelona Chair was honored with the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977.

The Back Cushions

The back cushion is slightly taller than the steel frame and angles with the curvature of the frame. Cushions are made of premium quality, highly resilient PU-Injected foam cushions are wrapped with Dacron, a synthetic silk. This results in a extremely comfortable chair with the highest level of durability. The Dacron wrap also provides the perfect amount of top visual plump to the cushion. The Upholstery two distinct, separate cushions that are fully upholstered with 40 individual panels that are cut, hand-welted, and hand-tufted with 24 leather buttons. The leather comes from a single, large cowhide.

The Choices of Genuine Leather

Top grain aniline leather - Aniline dyeing is the process of soaking the hides in transparent aniline dyes which allows color to absorb into the natural hide. Top grain aniline leather is then topical stain protected to minimize liquid absorption during every day use but does not require imitation grain stamping methods which imprint a faux grain over the majority of the leather surface. Without all the synthetic topical coatings, it breathes naturally making it comfortable for seating. It is soft, supple, durable and pliable, maintaining the characteristics of pure leather.

Italian Leather is a grade class above the standard grade leather. Realistic leather graining and a softer surface to the touch results in a more comfortable lounging experience.

 

The Frame

 

The original design used chrome finishing for the frame. In 1950, Mies changed the specifications to incorporate TIG (tungsten-electrode inert gas) welding. Today, the stainless steel version is the new “original.” The frame of Yadea's reproduction,is true to the Knoll's Barcelona chair, made of premium grade 304 bar stock stainless steel that is hand-buffed to a mirror finish. Then The rear seat cushion edge features an angular contour cut to compliment the angle of the frame. The 12mm thick heavy-gauge, solid core steel used on the frame provides maximum strength with the right amount of flex top and side heavy grade leather.
