LC2 Le Corbusier history

Le Corbusier is, perhaps, best remembered for his influence on the development of modernist design theory, especially in architecture, for his many famous structures across Europe, India, and America, and for his contributions in the field of urban-planning. It was in the late 1920s that he extended his design ambitions to include furniture, and it was at this time that his famous LC2 sofa and chair were developed.

The LC2 Sofa and Chair were designed by Le Corbusier in association with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand - another well-known French architect and designer. The LC3 sofa and chair were slightly larger versions of these more famouss "petit" models. These designs are brilliantly simple, and reflect Le Corbusier's strict adherence to his own design philosophy, which would become central to the modernist credo: that a useful object's composition must be informed clearly and directly by its intended function. It is this philosophy that has allowed the LC2, as well as many of Le Corbusier's other designs, to age so well.
